Bath Academy Overview

Bath Academy is a small, friendly school set in a lively area of beautiful Bath city. It offers a tutorial college environment, small class sizes, and a flexible curriculum of GCSE, A-level, Foundation and retakes. Boarding is available for both domestic and international students aged 14-18.

What is Bath Academy like?

Bath Academy offers a bespoke and flexible education in a very different setting to your typical traditional English independent school. Whilst it enrols a handful of GCSE students at age 14, Bath Academy predominantly caters for 6th form students who want to benefit from a tutorial college environment more akin to university. There is no uniform, students and teachers are on first name terms, and friendliness trumps formality.

Bath Academy comprises three teaching buildings spread on either side of Queen’s Square in Bath. It is a bustling quarter of this cosmopolitan small city – arguably the most beautiful city in England.

Is Bath Academy a good school?

Being based in an urban building, Bath Academy is not the place for students looking for lots of sports and expansive facilities. The school is more like a tutorial college, with a maximum of 8 students per class and an average of 3 or 4 in most A-level classes.

The school focuses on academic outcomes and offers a personal, homely environment to support each and every student on their personal journey.

Students take mock exams every single week, ensuring they are well drilled for final exam performances.

It is very much suited to more mature students who would prefer to go out for a coffee and a chat than run around a playground (the college has outside space, but no playground.)

This type of environment is not for everyone, but many students thrive in a personal, mature and supportive atmosphere.

What is boarding at Bath Academy like?

The school has a co-ed boarding house for around 20 students just a couple of minutes’ walk from the main teaching building. The house feels more like a giant shared flat than a more traditional boarding house, though it does boast a cosy common room and on-site kitchen and chef.

Most rooms are twin shared rooms with flip-up desk-beds and shared toilet and shower facilities.

As per the school’s ethos, students are treated as young adults and have freedom to come and go, with a sensible curfew in place.

What curriculum does Bath Academy offer?

The school offers a great breadth of subjects and variety of curriculum, demonstrating its ability to provide students with a bespoke programme of study.

GCSEs, A-levels,  International Foundation Programme, and Medical Foundation are all available.

The school is also highly regarded for its 1 year or 6 month GCSE and A-level retake programmes.

What are Bath Academy's academic results like?

As a non-selective school, it is no surprise that students’ results vary greatly. As a result, Bath Academy’s average exam result grades will never top the tables.

However, in 2023 13.8% of GCSE exams came out with the top scores of 9-8.

From the three results days of 2021-23, A-level retakers improved their results by an average of 2 grades. This might seem an impossible feat but is simply a testament to the effectiveness of small class sizes, individual care, and regular exam drilling.

What are the fees for Bath Academy?

Fees range considerably depending on the programme studied and whether boarding is required. At the lowest end of 2024’s fees, you can retake 1 GCSE subject for £7500 per year. At the higher end, international students will pay nearly £48k for full boarding with 3 or 4 A-levels.

How can I apply to Bath Academy?

The college will consider students year round, providing there are available places on your target course(s). As a small college, Bath Academy can be flexible with its provision, and will aim to explore the most appropriate academic programme for any individual.

Is Bath Academy hard to get into?

Bath Academy is non-selective and, with small class sizes and a supportive environment, can support a wide range of student abilities.

However, the school will vet students carefully to ensure they have the right attributes to contribute and collaborate in its small community. The college is understandably careful to protect its students from disruptive or poorly-behaved additions.

Attitude is key.
