What is Brighton College like?

Few people know or remember that, back in the nineties, Brighton College was at best described as run-of-the-mill, and rarely achieved better academic results than local state schools. Fast forward to 2026 and it is now rightly recognised as one of the top British private schools, with outstanding academic results and a progressive and inclusive ethos positioning it as a leader of a liberal British education.

The college is based on the edge of Brighton centre, a short walk from the beach in one of Britain’s most vibrant and multicultural cities. Hemmed in by the sea, city, and South Downs, the campus is not as huge as some of its counterparts, but cleverly incorporates all the facilities you could need for an exceptional education. It welcomes boarders from age 13+, but has a junior school for 11+ and a handful of associated prep schools in Sussex which can also offer boarding.

Is Brighton College a good school?

Yes, it’s very much top end. Academic results are always outstanding, and the community is close-knit enough to ensure everyone is included and offered the opportunity to make a telling contribution to the school’s success.

It’s probably not right for students who need a lot of external guidance, as the onus falls very much on Brighton College students to take responsibility for their own learning and personal development, and to be open-minded enough to ask difficult questions and respect the opinions of their peers.

Is it hard to get into Brighton College?

Yes, it’s highly selective and has a huge global reputation. As with a lot of the top schools, they will have a cap on nationalities to ensure a good balance. So if you are from a place where school “ranking” is paramount (we’re looking at you, Hong Kong parents!) then it is likely your application could be one of 1 in 20 from your region that succeeds.

Quite simply, the bare minimum academic standards are very high indeed, and successful applicants need to show what else they can bring if they are to succeed.

What is boarding at Brighton College like?

The boarding houses are in your classic old buildings with turrets and spires but, whilst old and beautiful, they are sympathetically converted and well appointed. Younger students share larger rooms to help them settle in, with rooms shared amongst fewer students as they get older. With a large proportion of students travelling some way to study at Brighton College, there is a healthy number of full boarders to keep weekends interesting.

One of the notable benefits of a campus surrounded by a wall and gatehouse is that everything is very secure and always within easy access for students.
