Cheltenham Ladies’ College Overview

Cheltenham Ladies’ College is amongst the highest achieving girls’ schools in the UK, and boasts a reputation which stretches around the globe. Located in the affluent city of Cheltenham, it seems like the quintessential British girls’ school on the surface, yet possesses a more down to earth and progressive character than you might expect.

What is Cheltenham Ladies’ College like?

The school campus is located near the town centre, and is a relatively straight forward 2 hour drive from London and its airports, though Bristol and Birmingham are closer for the school’s international arrivals. Despite being central and having more of a town-campus feel, the school has sufficient space for playing fields, a huge Arts centre and a very classical feeling library. Whilst the surface of Cheltenham Ladies College is extremely polished and well-presented, it is the interactions between staff and students which generate a true feeling of warmth and productivity.

Is it a good school?

Cheltenham Ladies’ College ranks as one of the top girls’ boarding schools in the world, as it always features amongst the top girls’ boarding schools for academic results and university progression. However, its commitment to personal development and ensuring its students are prepared to leave as creative and empathetic leaders is the most impressive aspect.

Is it hard to get into Cheltenham Ladies’ College?

Yes. Whilst the school provides support for those who need it, it remains a very academically selective and very oversubscribed destination for local girls and boarders from all over the world. Entrance at 11+ and 13+ is tough enough, but at 16+ the competition increases considerably.

What is boarding at Cheltenham Ladies’ like?

There are separate houses for sixth formers. In fitting with the rest of the school, all boarding houses are very polished and nearing the luxurious end of the scale when compared to some more rustic counterparts.

Despite the almost hotel quality accommodation, boarding at Cheltenham Ladies’ manages to retain a family feel as meals and entertainment are primarily arranged independently by each house.

A high proportion of girls are full boarders, which increases as you progress into the older year groups. Again, this ensures there is always someone to talk to and plenty to do.

Curriculum and exam results

It is GCSEs up until age 16, but then girls are given the choice of A-levels or the IB Diploma. Plenty of girls take on the Diploma for its extra breadth, and committing to this programme sets Cheltenham Ladies’ apart as one of the more outward looking and forward thinking of British girls’ schools.

There has been a definite move by students towards more STEM subjects, which the school has been quick to seize upon and develop. As a results, university courses and destinations are widely spread, though always at the higher end of the uni rankings.

What are the fees for Cheltenham Ladies' College?

Annual fees for 2023 are around £30k day and £42k boarding, though new sixth form entrants are now looking at fees in excess of £46k.

Can I apply for a scholarship?

Yes, though scholarships at Cheltenham Ladies’ College do not offer any fee remission. If you require financial assistance, you would need to go down the bursary route and, whilst the number of awards is naturally limited, some can be worth up to 100%.

How do you apply for Cheltenham Ladies’ College?

Punctually! The admissions staff receives swathes of applications at each entrance point of 11+, 13+ and 16+. It’s worth noting that, unlike some elite schools, Cheltenham Ladies’ will also consider occasional applications at 12+ and 14+, providing spaces are available.

Like all schools with a similar ethos, the entrance criteria is not all about grades on entrance assessments, and the school places a significant weighting on personality and interview. It’s therefore essential applicants have a strong understanding of what the school is about, and are confident that the mutual fit is excellent. Add Cheltenham Ladies’ to your favourites, submit an enquiry, and we’ll get in touch to hear your thoughts and help you along the way.
