Cherwell College Oxford Overview
Cherwell College Oxford is a small tutorial college in the heart of Oxford city centre. It offers bespoke tuition for students aged 12 to over 18, specialising in pre-university education and helping students get the grades they need to progress. Boarding is available for both domestic and international students.
What is Cherwell College like?
Cherwell College is not a traditional private school, falling firmly in the private 6th form category. So whilst it enrols younger students, the environment is mature and quite informal.
It welcomes students of senior school age, and can offer bespoke courses, such as retakes, for students over the age of 18. The focus is very much on finding the best pathway for students to achieve their academic goals. For this end, the college offers a wide range of GCSEs and A-levels, all as traditional 2 year courses, 1 year fat-track courses, or retakes.
Is Cherwell College a good school?
Cherwell College aims to provide a bespoke academic provision to help every student achieve their potential. It is therefore not very selective upon entry.
The college instead focuses on supporting each student with one-to-one tuition and small group seminars – all in keeping with the Oxbridge tutorial style of the college.
Cherwell’s extra-curricular activities and facilities are understandably limited by its size, location, and age range of its students. Despite this, the college strives to help its students find (or create!) whatever clubs and activities they wish to pursue.
What is boarding like at Cherwell College?
Cherwell offers purpose-built student accommodation which is very close to the station and about a 10-15 minute walk from the college teaching premises.
Due to its location the boarding house cannot offer the extent of sports pitches and extra facilities that a traditional boarding school can, but it has 50+ modern en-suite rooms, with social areas, dining hall and a 24/7 on-site welfare team.
What curriculum does Cherwell College offer?
Cherwell’s raison d’etre is to help students progress onto the best possible British universities and, as such, it focuses on the English national curriculum of GCSEs and A-levels.
Students usually take 3 A-levels, and can choose from around 20 subjects.
The college offers A-levels and GCSEs as both 2 year, 1 year, and retake courses, and maps out the best subject and timetable to map out each individual pupil’s goals.
As a flexible tutorial college, Cherwell also offers short courses including Easter revision programmes, summer courses, half term courses, and even online study options.
What are the fees for Cherwell College?
Cherwell specialises in providing bespoke timetables and, as such, can provide individual quotations for applicants.
The college tends to distinguish fees between one-to-one fees and small group fees. For example, annual 2023 one-to-one tuition fees for 3 A-levels are nearly £28,000. Taking the same course as part of a group comes in at £22,500.
Boarding fees are charged separately to the above tuition fees. These currently stand at just under £15,000 from September ’23 to the end of June ’24.
How can I apply to Cherwell College?
The main entrance points are in September and January, but applications are considered on a case by case basis at any time of the year.
Cherwell is not academically selective but still requires students to meet the minimum standards of aptitude and attitude. Applicants are required to regsiter and submit supporting documents before moving on to interview.
