What is St Edward's like?

Known universally as “Teddies”, St Edward’s campus of 800+ pupils occupies a spacious 100-acre campus on the edge of North Oxford. Whilst following an increasingly academically ambitious trajectory, it still places equal emphasis on creativity, sport, service and developing confident and responsible young people.

The campus is divided between its historic “Quad side” and “Field side”, linked by a private underpass beneath Woodstock Road. The setting creates a collegiate feel, with boarding houses, academic buildings and extensive sporting facilities spread across both sites. Planned investment in new sports facilities, including an athletics track, additional tennis courts and padel courts, will further enhance an already extensive provision.

The breadth of opportunities beyond the classroom is one of the school’s defining strengths. Pupils can choose from around 65 clubs and societies alongside an expansive sports programme, with more than 20 sports available in the Sixth Form. Music, drama and the arts enjoy particularly high participation, supported by specialist facilities including an impressive theatre, public-facing gallery space, dedicated ceramics studio and a strong performing arts department. Academic enrichment is equally prominent, with visiting speakers, university lecturers and admissions tutors making regular contributions to school life.

The atmosphere feels busy without being overly pressured. Pupils are encouraged to try new activities, and the school’s philosophy favours participation over specialisation during the earlier years.

Is St Edward's a good school?

St Edward’s is a strong choice for pupils who will thrive in a school that values breadth alongside academic achievement. Standards are high, but the culture is noticeably less narrowly selective than at some of its competitors, creating a community with a wide range of talents and interests.

Teaching is carried out by experienced staff, many of whom have been at the school for a considerable time. Small teaching groups in the Sixth Form allow close academic support, while the option of studying either A Levels or the International Baccalaureate Diploma enables pupils to choose the pathway best suited to their strengths and future ambitions.

The school’s Oxford location also adds another dimension to pupils’ education, with regular lectures, cultural opportunities and links with the wider city and university complementing classroom learning.

Is it hard to get in to St Edward's?

Entry is selective but holistic rather than narrowly academic. The main points of entry are Year 9 and Sixth Form, although places occasionally become available in other year groups.

Applicants are assessed through entrance examinations, interviews and references from their current school. Sixth Form applicants must meet the academic requirements for their chosen courses, whether A Levels or the IB Diploma.

The school looks beyond examination results alone, seeking pupils who will contribute positively to the wider life of the community. Early registration is advisable, particularly for boarding places.

What is boarding like at St Edward's?

Boarding remains central to life at St Edward’s, with the majority of pupils belonging to one of the school’s boarding houses. Houses are intentionally mixed across year groups, encouraging friendships between older and younger pupils and creating a strong sense of community.

Pastoral care is built around developing independence gradually. Boarders follow a structured routine that balances academic work with co curricular activities and social time. Younger pupils typically share rooms, progressing to doubles before enjoying single study bedrooms in the Sixth Form. Houses provide welcoming common rooms, quieter study spaces and year specific areas that reflect pupils’ growing independence.

Technology is carefully managed. Younger pupils have restricted access to mobile phones during the school week, with greater freedom introduced as pupils mature. The approach aims to encourage face to face interaction while developing responsibility and self-management in the Sixth Form.

Boarders enjoy sensible freedoms appropriate to their age, including time in nearby Summertown and visits into central Oxford at weekends.
