Tonbridge School Overview
A top-performing boys' day and boarding school under an hour from central London, offering a broad and vigorous education for around 800 domestic and international young men aged 13 to 18.
What is Tonbridge School like?
Not far from the train station and castle lies Tonbridge School, one of the top boys’ day and boarding schools for boys aged 13-18.
Tonbridge is relatively down to earth and its boys come across as thoughtful and polite. Sport is a primary focus (the facilities are amongst the best in the county) but the school also provides a broad and expansive curriculum to ensure the Arts are experienced, enjoyed, and appreciated in full.
The main building is of a beautiful classic design and is backed up with modern and well-equipped subject-specific teaching facilities. The science centre, opened at great expense in early 2019, is particularly impressive and has increased the school’s ability to attract the best and brightest STEM students.
Is it a good school?
Tonbridge always ranks as one of the top boys’ schools for both GCSEs and A-levels. High demand and a high bar for entrance ensure that the majority of boys arrive as academic high-fliers and push on from there.
The school has a great balance of academics, sports and arts, and the older main buildings are brilliantly supplemented by newer additions. Boys need to be kept occupied (or else chaos ensues,) so the sporting facilities are amongst some of the best you will find.
The atmosphere is one of competitive but collaborative boyish charm. Energy levels are high but channelled in the right direction by a staff of highly qualified and experienced educators.
Is it hard to get into Tonbridge School?
Yes. Despite competition from some very successful local (and free!) grammar schools, Tonbridge remains inundated with a heady mix of top local day students, talented weekly boarders who make the short journey down from London, and some incredibly bright overseas and domestic students who stay as full boarders.
All this means that competition for places is fierce, with multiple pinch points where candidates are filtered through (or out) of the next round of considerations.
What is boarding at Tonbridge School like?
The school sits on the edge of the working town of Tonbridge, a ten minute walk from the station with direct 40 minute commutes to central London. It is therefore popular with London day boarders, as well as the many full boarders who come from further afield or overseas.
Like most 13+ schools the initial year or two is spent in larger shared rooms, giving boys the opportunity to mix and integrate with a wide range of peers. Older year groups share in smaller groups or have their own single rooms.
Most students stay for sports fixtures on Saturdays, and full boarders are provided with a range of trips and activities to keep them occupied until all boarders return on Sunday evening.
Curriculum and exam results
Tonbridge School offers GCSEs and A-levels which, as you would expect, are heavily supplemented with relevant topic-led clubs and super curricular initiatives. All students are academic high-fliers and specialist preparation for Oxbridge or Med school applicants is widespread.
Over 20 A-level subjects are available, so there is strong breadth for all interests, and results are always in the top tier of all schools. Needless to say, university progression is almost entirely to the top tier of institutions, with Tonbridge boasting a particular acuity for recommending universities based on their subject-specific qualities.
What are the fees?
Tonbridge School’s surrounding area is a fairly affluent part of the country, reflected in 2023’s day fees of around £33k. Boarding is closer to £45k.
Can I apply for a scholarship?
Yes, Tonbridge has numerous fee reduction initiatives including scholarships and bursaries. As long as you are on time with applications and comfortably meet the academic and personal entrance requirements, you could be in with a reasonable chance of benefitting from the school’s charitable proactivity.
How do you apply for Tonbridge School?
There is a non-refundable registration fee of £250, after which exams and interviews are required to proceed further into consideration. It is particularly important to meet the deadlines for each particular entrance point as, whilst a handful of places are reserved for late applications, the scarcity of these increases the challenge exponentially.
